In plant biotechnology applications, silver nitrate can be used as an additive for culture medias, e.g. for callus cultures. This product supplies the plant with the silver ions which act as ethylen antagonists (Beyer 1976). 

In Coffea canephora a concentration of 30-60 µM AgNO3 raised the yield of embryons, whereas higher concentrations effected the regeneration capacity negatively (Fuentes et al. 2000). In chile pepper (Capsicum annuum), AgNO3 promoted shoot development and regeneration in vitro, too (Hyde & Phillips 1996).

Nabikan et al. (2010) described the Synthesis of colloidal silver particles in Sesuvium portulacastrum, whereas AgNO3 served as a substrate for the reduction process within the callus culture. The plant-derived colloids (spherical, ca. 5-20 nm) have been positively tested for antimicrobial (antifungal/antibacterial) activity.
