The original composition of the NLN medium was described by Nitsch & Nitsch (1967). In 1981 the composition was modified to a 13 % sucrose containing medium (NLN-13) by Lichter (1981). The medium was developed for the isolation of microspores from Brassica napus. The microspores were used to generate haploid plants (Lichter, 1982).
L-glutamine, L- serine and glutathione serves as sources for amino acids.
